In 2019, Colorado hit record levels of venture activity across the state. Colorado Inno’s Nick Greenhalgh reported: “Colorado startups raised nearly $2.5 billion across 390 venture capital deals in 2019.” Due to the influx in startups across the Front Range, one of the most exciting aspects about living and working in Denver is the vast amount of employment opportunities in innovative fields.
With a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Dartmouth College, Claire Apuan joined the team as Mechanical Engineer at Cipher Skin, driven by her interest in product development for healthcare and human performance. Claire stated: “Cipher Skin’s platform is based upon predicting failure with authentic data which aligns closely with my drive to use data-based solutions for purposeful engineering.”
Cities such as Denver, that are hubs for tech startups, often bring together groups of like-minded individuals who are focused on making things happen, fast. Reflecting on her experience thus far at Cipher Skin, Claire added: “I am consistently blown away by the intelligence and dedication of my colleagues. The complex ideas that are so easily thrown around and discussed make for an exciting environment full of innovation.” Cipher Skin’s mission is to develop a groundbreaking technology that revolutionizes the way data – on the human body or any physical object – is collected, reported, analyzed and monitored.
Each team member’s internal investment to fulfill this mission, along with a culture that fosters the ability to freely discuss ideas in an open, collaborative environment, has played an integral role in why Cipher Skin has been able to grow so quickly, selling an unparalleled product while still remaining a small company.
In his article written for Forbes called “Why Innovation Is Crucial to Your Organization’s Long-Term Success,” Theodore Henderson, Business and Leadership Coach, stated: “Creativity plus work results in innovation. Therefore, being innovative means you harness your creative ability.” Henderson continued: “When a company has an innovative culture, it’ll grow easily, despite the fact that the creative process isn’t always simple.” From solving new problems to coming up with unique product features, Cipher Skin is always busy, and Claire sees the spirit of innovation happening daily. “We are constantly coming up with novel solutions to unique challenges.” When reflecting on what excites her most about working at Cipher Skin, Claire revealed: “Out of all the work I do, I get most excited about implementing new features into our technology because there are just so many paths to explore with what we’ve created. Every time we successfully implement something new, it is further proof of the versatility of our product.”
Out of all the tech startups in Denver, Claire saw an opportunity in Cipher Skin’s technology that she couldn’t find anywhere else. Claire stated: “My favorite part about developing our technology is that I have the opportunity to take on projects at different ends of the engineering spectrum and broaden the horizons of my engineering knowledge.” In his article, Henderson added that when it comes to being part of a team: “Innovation can also help develop original concepts while giving the innovator a proactive, confident attitude to take risks and get things done.” It is Cipher Skin’s adoption of this cultural mindset that inspires Claire. She added: “I feel like I came in at a pivotal time for development where the contributions I have are significant and compelling. This definitely comes with the responsibility to do high-quality work, but also means I can have a feeling of ownership over the products we are working on.”
